Artificial Geography / Metamorphosis, 2012
Artist Statement / Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis is part of the Artificial Geography series. This body of work is the result of my interpretation of nature in the process of transformation. I recreate a variety of elements from natural arches by simplifying their original form and combining them into abstracted compositions.
My painting captures the general visual effect of an scene instead of the details. The fusion of lights, shadows, vibrant colors and textures describe a more powerful impression than a formal description. In a sense, nature is just an excuse to explore the atmosphere of change in a constantly evolving world.
I work with oil paint and use pallet knife to create thick impastos. Spontaneous splashes of color intensify the impression of movement and transformation of the images.
In a metaphorical manner, I consolidate the natural universe, and the concept of artificial geography constructed by man. For me, this symbolizes the possibility of harmony in the chaos of the modern world.
